The Charles Hayward Foundation was formed, along with The Hayward Foundation, by Sir Charles Hayward with the aim to make a difference and improve people’s lives in the UK. The two charities have since merged and the Foundation now supports solely registered charities through small and main grant programmes within specific categories.
Main Grants:
Aiming to prevent people entering the criminal justice system and to support those already in the system to move on and rebuild their lives. Funding early intervention programmes with young children and their families, tailored preventative work with young people at risk, and holistic support services aimed at reducing re-offending and aiding re-settlement. The Foundation also looks to alleviate the consequences of domestic abuse. Charities must have an annual income of between £350,000 and £4,000,000.
The trustees will fund projects over one to three years with grants of £15,000 – £25,000 per annum.
Currently Closed to new applicants with no plans to re-open in the near future.
This area is open to UK based charities that are undertaking projects in the Commonwealth Countries of Africa and in the following areas:
- Clean water and sanitation
- Development of sustainable livelihoods in the context of environmental and wildlife conservation
- Self sustainability through training in farming skills and income generation activities
Charities must have an annual income between £150,000 and £4,000,000. Grants are up to £15,000 for one off projects.
Small Grants:
- Programmes aiming to alleviate isolation and depression in older people, including informal day care or social, physical and recreational activities.
- Programmes which give practical help, assistance and support for older people living in their own homes.
- Programmes addressing the emotional and practical needs of older carers.
- Programmes designed to meet the specific needs of people with dementia.
Charities must have an annual income of less than £350,000. Grants are up to £7,000
In order to apply for a Main grant you are required to write a letter/proposal detailing your project, with details offered in each section of the website on what to cover in your letter. The Small grant programme covers only the Older People’s category and can be accessed via a set application form that can be downloaded from the Foundation’s website.
